General
Smartutor is a structured 28-week maths programme designed specifically for Year 5 and Year 6 children. It covers every key topic needed for SATs success and grammar school entry.
The programme is built around physical workbooks delivered to your door each month, supported by help sheets, videos and - depending on your chosen tier - live teaching sessions with a specialist Year 6 tutor.
Smartutor was created by Jon Coleman, a qualified primary school teacher and former maths lead with over a decade of experience, the majority of which was spent teaching Year 6. Jon designed the entire 28-week curriculum from scratch based on what he saw children genuinely needed in his classroom.
Every worksheet, every topic sequence and every help sheet has been carefully thought through by someone who has sat with hundreds of children and watched them work through exactly these problems.
The programme covers all key Year 6 maths topics across 26 sections and 7 workbooks, including:
Number and place value, ordering and rounding
Formal addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Fractions, decimals and percentages
Ratio and proportion
Algebra, sequences and BODMAS
Measurement, time and geometry
Statistics, graphs and data handling
Workbook 7 also includes a mini SATs paper, both arithmetic and reasoning.
Yes. The programme is designed to work well for both year groups. Year 6 children will be covering content directly relevant to their upcoming SATs. Year 5 children benefit from getting ahead - working through the programme a year early means they arrive in Year 6 with a significant advantage. As well as this, the year 5 maths curriculum in primary school is almost identical to year 6.
The programme is also well-suited to children preparing for grammar school 11+ entry, where strong maths is essential.
Each worksheet is designed to take approximately 10–20 minutes. There is one worksheet per day, five days a week. This makes the programme manageable even for busy families - it's a small daily habit rather than a large time commitment.
For Group and Premium tiers, the weekly live Zoom session runs for 45 minutes on top of the daily worksheet practice.
